A Surprise at Castlewood Canyon State Park

Today was a big day.

Castlewood Canyon State Park, located near Franktown, Colorado (about 15 minutes south of Parker, CO), is one of the only state parks in the Denver metro area that Anna and I hadn’t visited yet. On this beautiful winter day, Anna, Morsel, Tilly, and I took the trip south to learn more about this historic area.

The Castlewood Canyon Dam, built in 1890, burst open in 1933 after heavy rains caused the already leaking dam to fail, unleashing a 15 ft. wall of water rushing toward Denver causing catastrophic destruction. The dam, and the beautiful area along the Cherry Creek, was later turned into a state park and is open for hikers to learn a little bit more about the history of the incident and see the restoration of the Cherry Creek back to normal.

This particular trip was special for more than a just the history lesson or to check off another state park from our list: on this trip to Castlewood Canyon, I got down on my knee on the top of a canyon overlook and asked Anna to marry me.

She said yes!

So, if you are planning a trip to Castlewood Canyon, keep in mind that there’s a little more history to be aware of while you’re basking in the beauty of the park.
