A Visit to Jackson Hole

Another opportunity to follow Anna to a conference? Count me in!

I’d never been to Jackson before. It’s a town that you hear a lot about, despite being such a tiny place nestled into the mountains in the middle of Wyoming.

Mostly famous as the “Gateway to Yellowstone,” the town is surrounded by the constant reminder of nature around it. It’s an outdoorsman’s paradise. At least, when it’s not snowing like crazy outside. Which it totally was when I was visiting.

Morsel, Tilly, and I headed up to meet up with Anna who had already spent a couple days at a conference. The drive from Denver to Jackson wasn’t too bad, even despite some places where the weather was patchy.

While in Jackson, Anna and I (and sometimes her coworker) went for hikes around town, ate at some great little restaurants, and saw an old school friend. When you visit, make sure to see the antler arches! (They’re crazy!)

Driving back home was an adventure in itself. On the way back, weather along I-80 in Wyoming caused the highway to get shut down. Literally just as we got there.

In a choice between stuck in Rock Springs, WY or driving a few hour detour, we quite easily and quickly chose the detour. Mostly because we didn’t want to spend a night in Rock Springs.

Taking U.S. 191 south, we got stuck in some very dicey driving just before getting into Utah. Many drivers with the same idea as us braved the snow, but not that many had vehicles who could handle it. I think we spent 45 minutes on a hill where dozens of 2WD cars drove forward three feet and slid back four feet. After enough of them gave up and turned around, we managed to take the truck over the hill and south through Utah, past the Flaming Gorge (which is gorge-ous, by the way), and down to I-70 in Colorado, where we fought the snow all the way home. It took about 13 hours of driving, but we did make it home. See the map at the bottom for the route we took.
