Camping at Buffalo Pass

A Labor Day weekend isn’t complete without a camping trip somewhere. But for this special long weekend, we didn’t decide to go just anywhere. We decided to go up to Steamboat.

Steamboat Springs, for those who don’t know, is a mountain resort town out in the middle of northwestern Colorado. It’s a cute place with lots of tourism opportunities, shopping options, and small restaurants. It’s easily walkable and surrounded by beautiful mountains.

Anna and I drove out into the middle of Buffalo Pass, an area in the Routt National Forest, and set up camp. We had to drive pretty far in, as many of the camping spaces were already held by other campers. Basically, we drove down roads until we couldn’t drive any farther (literally, there was a tree blocking the road) and made camp there, just in time for sunset. We hiked out, looked over the horizon, had a moose encounter, and then had a peaceful night in the middle of the forest.

We’ll have to make another trip back to Steamboat and Buffalo Pass. There’s so much to explore!

Tip for travelers: It’s a long drive from Denver, and Labor Day traffic can slow you down. Make sure to leave earlier than you think you need to.
