If You’re From the Las Vegas Tourism Board, Disregard These Photos
Last December, when my cousin Matt asked me if we’d be down to meet up in Las Vegas over Memorial Day weekend, I immediately said “yes!”
Matt & Kayla live in Washington and we don’t often get to see them, so the opportunity to hang out in Nevada and Utah with them was a no-brainer. We slowly put together a plan to fly into Las Vegas on the same day (a plan which would have worked a little better if our flight hadn’t been delayed four hours) and spend some time exploring the Strip for a night before heading on to other adventures.
In the course of one night, we sang “My Heart Will Go On” as the Bellagio Fountain “danced,” explored a handful of casinos, checked out an awesome Chihuly installation, split an awesomely huge plate of nachos (we gave up trying to finish them), and walked around until our feet hurt and it was time to go to bed. The next morning, we went to breakfast (see my post on going to Hoover Dam) and then on to Utah (see my posts on Utah, Snow Canyon and Zion National Park).
The day we had to leave, the most convenient way back to Las Vegas was by shuttle. The shuttle conveniently left at 4 AM. (Cue eye roll.) We shuttled all the way to the Vegas airport, arrived at 5 AM (thank you, time change!) and checked our bag. We then took the WAX into town for breakfast and another nearly 30K step day.
Even though it didn’t open until 7 AM, we walked our way up to the Cosmopolitan for breakfast at Eggslut, a primarily egg-sandwich restaurant. The sandwiches were good, but not life changing. You will notice that in the photo my sandwich looks meaty, and you are not wrong: I got the “Gaucho,” a wagyu beef breakfast sandwich with one very, very runny egg inside of it.
After breakfast, Anna and I tried to walk through all of the strip casino/hotels that we hadn’t explored before. I think our favorite ended up being the Venetian because it was clean, beautiful, and laid back. We then went from casino to casino until lunch time, where we ate Secret Pizza, and then winded our way back to the bus stop to the airport.
This trip was a great getaway! While Anna and I aren’t the biggest gamblers, Las Vegas proves to be the people-watching capitol of the world, with plenty of unique locations to explore.
