Running a 5K at the Wild Animal Sanctuary

Lions, tigers, and runners! The Into the Wild 5K was the most exciting bit of running we’ve done all year. Located at the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keenesburg, Colorado, this run takes place on the paths around the sanctuary that aren’t usually accessible to anyone but staff members. Consequently, you end up running within feet of lions and bears, with only a thin fence dividing you from some of nature’s greatest beasts. Seriously though, for about 10 seconds, I was running next to a young bear who was, in my opinion, taunting me. Not only that, runners were treated to a concert, food, and even some free beer at the end. It’s cemented in as a must-do event for the foreseeable future. Most of these photos were taken with my iPhone after the race, when participants were granted entrance to the sanctuary. Next year, I’ll bring my good camera.
