Ski-daddling to Leadville: Escaping Football for Snowballs

Over Anna’s birthday weekend, we decided that the hype over the Super Bowl was a good excuse to get out of town for the mountain slopes of Leadville. We packed our bags, got a dog sitter, and set off for the mountain town of Leadville, Colorado.

Situated at an elevation of 10,152 feet, Leadville is the highest incorporated town in the United States. And it shows. Everywhere you look, there are mountain tops, many feet of snow, and, of course, out-of-breath tourists.

Our journey took us to The Abbey Inn, a beautiful bed and breakfast in the heart of downtown that once was a convent for the nearby Catholic church. We visited several of Leadville’s fine restaurants and breweries, walked around on trails with snow packed at least 4′ deep, and on Super Bowl Sunday we headed over to Ski Cooper.

It may have been the timing, but I have the feeling that Cooper is easily one of the most chill ski resorts in Colorado. This smallish resort is one of the oldest in Colorado, and it’s great for the casual skier/snowboarder looking to get away from the crowds of the larger resorts along the I-70 corridor. We’ll definitely be going back.
