Snowshoeing on the Fourth of July

This is the second time we’ve visited the Fourth of July trailhead while it was snowy and cold, but it was the first time we did so with snowshoes.

Arriving somewhat early, we snagged parking a couple-hundred yards from the trailhead. The snow in the area was about 8′ high in some places, mostly hovered around 2-3′. The trail was mostly pretty well packed from moderate foot traffic, but hiking in boots would have been much more difficult.

On this trip, we saw some awesome views of the Arapahoe & Roosevelt National Forests, some beautiful snow-draped scenery, and the cutest little snow mouse you could ever shake a stick at. Snowshoeing is difficult, but we loved it!

Pro tip: Get there early. The parking is limited and you may be forced to hike a significant distance just to get to the trailhead.
